{"id":2166,"date":"2023-10-12T07:19:08","date_gmt":"2023-10-12T07:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.helsapart.com\/?p=2166"},"modified":"2023-10-12T07:22:41","modified_gmt":"2023-10-12T07:22:41","slug":"worlds-1st-drug-to-regrow-teeth-enters-clinical-trials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.helsapart.com\/fa\/worlds-1st-drug-to-regrow-teeth-enters-clinical-trials\/","title":{"rendered":"World\u2019s 1st drug to regrow teeth enters clinical trials"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ability to regrow your own teeth could be just around the corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/d21y75miwcfqoq.cloudfront.net\/70c8fc80\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A team of scientists, led by a Japanese pharmaceutical startup, are getting set to start human trials on a new drug that has successfully grown new teeth in animal test subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toregem Biopharma is slated to begin clinical trials in July of next year after it succeeded&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2023\/09\/24\/japan\/science-health\/japan-pharma-grows-new-teeth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">growing new teeth in mice<\/a>&nbsp;five years ago, the Japan Times reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Katsu Takahashi, a lead researcher on the project and head of the dentistry and oral surgery department at the Medical Research Institute Kitano Hospital, says \u201cthe idea of growing new teeth is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mainichi.jp\/english\/articles\/20230609\/p2a\/00m\/0sc\/026000c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">every dentist\u2019s dream<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mainichi.jp\/english\/articles\/20230609\/p2a\/00m\/0sc\/026000c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">working on this since I was a graduate student<\/a>,\u201d he told Japan\u2019s national daily news site, the Mainichi, earlier this year. \u201cI was confident I\u2019d be able to make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his research, which he\u2019s been conducting at Kyoto University since 2005, Takahashi learned of a particular gene in mice that affects the growth of their teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/700751\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">antibody for this gene, USAG-1<\/a>, can help stimulate tooth growth if it is suppressed \u2013 and scientists have since worked to develop a \u201cneutralizing antibody medicine\u201d that is able to block USAG-1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, his team has been testing the theory that \u201cblocking\u201d this protein could grow more teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After their successful tests on mice, the team went on to perform similarly positive trials on ferrets \u2013 animals who have a similar dental pattern to humans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"503\" height=\"383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.helsapart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/ferret-teeth.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.helsapart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/ferret-teeth.jpg 503w, https:\/\/www.helsapart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/ferret-teeth-300x228.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 503px) 100vw, 503px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The front teeth of a ferret treated with tooth regrowth medicine. The medicine induced the growth of an additional seventh tooth (centre).\u00a0Courtesy \/ Dr. Katsu Takahash<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, testing will turn to healthy adult humans and, if all goes well, the team plans to hold a clinical trial for the drug from 2025 for children between two and six years old with anodontia \u2013 a rare genetic disorder that results in the absence of six or more baby and\/or adult teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Japan Times, the children involved in the clinical trial will be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2023\/09\/24\/japan\/science-health\/japan-pharma-grows-new-teeth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">injected with one dose of the drug<\/a>&nbsp;to see if it induces teeth growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If successful, the medicine could be available for regulatory approval by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Takahashi hopes the new medicine could be just another option for those who don\u2019t have a full set of teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn any case, we\u2019re hoping to see a time when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mainichi.jp\/english\/articles\/20230609\/p2a\/00m\/0sc\/026000c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tooth-regrowth medicine<\/a>\u00a0is a third choice alongside dentures and implants,\u201d Takahashi told Mainichi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reference link: https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/9984605\/tooth-regrowth-drug\/ <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ability to regrow your own teeth could be just around the corner.
